Alexander Lincoln: Unveiling the Actor Behind the Roles in an Exclusive Interview
Alexander Lincoln is one of those actors who brings a rare depth to every role. From playing a conflicted rugby player in In From the Side to diving into the dark, twisty world of London’s nighttime streets in On A Winter Night, his performances leave a lasting impact with their honesty and emotional intensity. He’s the kind of actor who doesn’t just take on a role, he becomes it, blending his real-life experiences with the characters he brings to life on screen.
But when he’s not on set, Alexander’s all about new experiences. Currently soaking in the stunning landscapes of rural Australia, he’s recharging his creativity and letting nature do its thing. He’s not a fan of having everything mapped out in advance, preferring to play it by ear and see where life leads him, whether it’s chasing new career goals or turning his dream of building a home in the forest into a reality.
Get ready for a look into the mind of someone who’s all about living authentically, taking on challenging roles, and dreaming big.
People around the world have been deeply moved by In From the Side, watching it again and again. What do you think makes the film so powerful, and how did you bring that honesty to the screen, balancing love, secrecy, and the raw world of rugby?
Alexander Lincoln: It’s such a wonderful experience being a part of a film that has resonated with so many people and each year seems to do the same. Getting messages from fans of the film never ceases to put a smile on my face!
It’s hard to put a distinct finger on what makes it still hit audiences and stay with them. I think a lot of it is that these characters are so real, Matt did a great job with the script of creating these characters and free reign for us actors to chop and change as we saw fit once we began moving further into the process.
I think with any character, the honesty is paramount; there is always something of myself in many of the characters I have played and will continue to play.
In your new film On A Winter Night, you’re part of a journey through the night in London full of surprises. How did you connect to Oliver’s search for meaning and freedom?
AL: This film is a project I’m really passionate about. Diego Scerrati, the writer and producer, did such an incredible job with these characters, there is so much depth and beauty with them individually, but even more-so together. There was a connection to Oliver’s character that I had which I didn’t expect as strongly as it was on set. He’s a troubled character, they both are, but Oliver’s nuances were really interesting to explore in a detail which I hadn’t been able with other characters.
You’ve played a variety of characters. Do you ever take inspiration from your own life or experiences when portraying them? What part of you do you see in your roles?
AL: Oh absolutely! I always bring some of myself to them - whether it’s a moral framing, ideology, or more surface level - such as mannerisms. It changes with each character I believe.
Is there a dream role or story you’re dying to explore that’s completely outside what you’ve done so far?
AL: I really really like antagonists, I’d love to do stuff which is darker and further away from myself - to push into that world.
You’ve been open about your sexuality, and it’s really connected with people. Has that changed the kind of stories or characters you’re drawn to?
AL: It hasn’t changed the kind of characters I want to play. Ultimately, whatever the sexuality - I’m drawn to characters whose stories I find interesting and I love the change of perspective and framing that can happen when you get into a new character’s head.
When it comes to unwinding, do you find that travelling to new places or spending time in nature helps recharge creativity and mental energy? How does it influence your mindset and work?
AL: I love travelling - I’m currently in Australia, NSW to be exact, and I am in love with the landscapes and nature here. It’s all so rural.
Any big dreams or exciting plans you’re chasing in both your career and personal life? Do you prefer sticking to a plan, or do you like to play it by ear and see where it leads you next?
AL: I’ve never been a plan guy, my friends and family will tell you; probably to my detriment… I’ve got a lot of personal goals this year which I want to achieve and am very excited about. Some cool potential work things, which will be great.
However, the main aim which has been ticking away for a while is getting some land and building a little house and a forest on it- though now the question lies; where shall I get it...
